SP1 Carbon dynamics

Carbon dynamics in different land use systems

The objective is to assess the impact of intensified rubber cultivation on spatial and temporal carbon dynamics in different land use systems. Analyses include plant and soil carbon stocks and gaseous flows from soil to the atmosphere in rubber plantations of different age and of natural forest, as well as carbon in overland and lateral flows within different watersheds and into major rivers. These data are used to improve and validate the LUCIA (Land Use Change Impact Assessment) model as a tool for evaluating current and alternative land use systems on short and long-term effects on environmental services. The improved LUCIA model will assist planning agencies and agricultural authorities, and will promote interactions with local stakeholders.
