Institutional framework

Under the Framework Programme Research for Sustainable Development (FONA) contributing to the solution of global problems, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has established the research activity “Sustainable Land Management”. Its aim is the creation of the required knowledge and decision bases for sustainable land management as well as the provision of action strategies and instruments for a forward-thinking adaptation of regional land use to global change. Thus, knowledge-oriented and implementation-oriented research is being linked. This is a precondition for the better system understanding of the essential processes of global change.

The joint project SURUMER is involved the programme “sustainable land management”, in the specific focal research point A on “Interaction between land management, climate change and ecosystem services”, along with about a dozen other joint projects with its activities in various regions of the world. In close cooperation with the partner countries, common strategies of action, technologies and systems solutions are being developed for the selected regions. The different joint projects are overall coordinated and accompanied by the project GLUES (Global Assessment of Land Use Dynamics, Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Ecosystem Services) at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig. With its activities, GLUES supports the regional projects, their scientific exchange as well as the synthesis and the transfer of the overall results
